One famous quote from Jennie Finch is....
“To some Softball is a game; to others it's Life.”― Jennie Finch
For those who do not know who Jennie Finch is, she is a famous softball player. (Recently retired now because of 2nd child on way.) I will do a separate blog on her later.
Softball is a summer sport!!
The basic skills that you would/need to have is how to catch, hit and throw a ball. You also need to run really fast to bases. If you don't really like running or if you get scared easily if a ball comes towards you, softball isn't really your kind of sport to be playing then.
Supplies you will need for sport: Klets, Slider pants or shorts, under armor for cold weather (optional), knee high socks, glove, softball bat, face mask, batting gloves, helmet and a softball bag to put everything in to carry to games. Be sure to get the right size for the glove and bat. You will get you jersey (team shirt) from the couch. Catchers will need legguards, chest protector, catchers mitt, and catchers helmet with additional to everything else listed.
Infield Positions: Catcher, Pitcher, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Short-Stop, and 3rd.
Outfield Positions: Right field, Left field and Center field or to replace Center field there would be a Left center and a Right center spot leaving 4 spots outfield rather than just 3. There are 3 bases and 1 home plate.
How to play:
The home team takes the field first while the away team bats first.
The home team takes the field first while the away team bats first.
On field- Go to assigned positions. Pitchers pitch the ball to the catcher. If ball is hit the closest person to the ball should run and catch it and throw it to 1st base for the force out. If the ball was hit to the outfield the person that caught the ball will throw it to there cut off. After the play is done they return the ball to the pitcher.
Batting: You will have a batting order. If you are the person after the person up to bat you will be considered on deck. When batting you will stand in the batters box made by chalk. DO NOT STAND ON PLATE. You will be able to have 2 strikes and 3 balls (full count) before you will get out ~strike 3~ or get walked ~ball 4~. The only base you can run through or past is 1st base. If you run past any other base you will be automatically out. You only run through all of the bases once, stopping at home base. Getting one more score added to your teams points.
There are only 7 quarters in a game. If your team is 10 runs ahead of the other team by the 4 quarter the game ends and your team automatically wins, that is called the 10 run rule. The game usually only lasts up to about an hour long. After the hour is up the team with the highest points wins. If its a tie they go into over time which is where they go till the next team member scores a run and that team that scored wins the game. If a game gets rained out, the game will be rescheduled (continued) another day right where it was left off from the previous game.
